Palmistry, also known as cheiromancy (Greek, ‘hand-prophecy’), is reading the lines and shape of the palm of a person\'s hand to make statements about that person\'s character, past and future. It was practised in ancient China, and from there passed to the Middle East and then to Europe (where it became notably a skill of travellers and immigrants, such as the Gypsies). It is commonly regarded as a joke or a parlour game, but those who believe in it claim that the palm is as unique to each individual as a fingerprint, and that ignorance of why palmistry works is no more reason for dismissing it than is the case with any other mysterious technique from ancient China, for example, acupuncture.
