Palladianism is the style of the academic, classically inspired architecture of the north Italian architect Andrea Palladio (1508 - 1580), who designed symmetrically planned villas with colonnaded porticoes on the model of temple fronts (features he wrongly believed to be a characteristic of Roman villas). The example of his buildings and his architectural drawings was immensely influential in English country house architecture of the 18th century, and thereafter in the US. JM
