Biomass, in ecology, describes the total weight of living organisms of one species within a given area such as a habitat or biome. Biomass provides an indication of the energy stored within a community and the rate of change of biomass shows the productivity of the system under study. In a food web or chain, the biomass of the producers (green plants) greatly exceeds that of the consumers (herbivores and carnivores) because the transfer of energy between each link is inefficient.
