Biology (Greek, ‘study of life’) is the study of living organisms in terms of the physical and chemical systems which they comprise. Broad aspects of study include origin, classification, structure, function and interaction with each other and with their environment. The term biology was coined by Karl Burdach (1776 - 1847) to describe the study of man, but was expanded by the German physiologist , Gottfried Treviranus (1776 - 1837) to encompass the scientific study of life.
