Synergism (Greek, ‘working-togetherism’), in the life sciences, describes a cooperative interaction between two systems such that their combined action exceeds the sum of their actions in isolation. The phenomenon is most commonly encountered in pharmacology when two drugs exert a synergistic effect—alcohol and sleeping pills together have a far more profound effect than comparable doses of each taken alone.
