Psychotic individuals, faced with their own particular history, escape it by taking on a private reality of delusions and hallucinations, a reality which has its own internal logic. Psychotic patients, as well as those who are borderline and narcissistic, have a severely damaged sense of self. There are three major psychoses: schizophrenia, manic-depressive illness (now known as reversal syndrome) and paranoia (often regarded as a variety of schizophrenia). There is a tendency to use the word psychosis interchangeably with insanity, but otherwise insanity (and sanity) are only used by psychiatrists, analysts and therapists as legal terms. MJ |
