Programme music is music (usually instrumental) which is written to illustrate a specific, declared programme: the events of a battle, say, or feelings aroused by walking in the countryside, or the sights and sounds of a particular area. In a few cases (using cowbells or imitating birdsong, for example), music can be directly evocative. But usually the ‘programme’ of a piece of music is a subjective phenomenon, depending in the first instance on non-musical communication (such as a declarative title or a programme note) between composer and hearer.
