Parallel Computing |

Parallel computing is one of the major new directions computing has taken since the 1980s. In the past, computers had only one processing unit and processed instructions in the order in which they were received. In the early days of computing, this was a major advance, but by the 1980s it was imposing speed restrictions on computers which became more and more acute. The idea of parallel computing is that several processors, connected together and communicating with each other, carry out several different instructions at once. This makes vast savings in time possible, though development is still in its infancy. SMcL |
