Mythology (Greek, ‘study of myth’) has two specific meanings. First, a ‘mythology’ is the corpus of myths, and the study of the myths, of a particular area: Amerindian mythology, Egyptian mythology and so on. Second, mythology is the study of myth itself. This is a discipline related to anthropology, language studies, literature and theology, and sets out to relate the myths of a given area to those of other areas, and to the beliefs and lives of the people who invented them. An important branch of such study is world mythology, a comparative study of the myths and legends of the entire world, and thus of the human race at one. KMcL |
