Mystery Play |
|

|
The Mystery Play is a form of medieval European religious drama. Mystery is a term for a craft guild (whose members had skills which were kept from outsiders). In some areas the guilds were responsible for staging plays on religious festivals which might retell the whole of the Bible story from Creation to Crucifixion and beyond to the Last Judgement. Each guild took responsibility for an appropriate story (for example, the nailmakers staged the Crucifixion) and the result was a powerful expression of community theatre reinforcing a religious message.
