Multiples are artefacts produced in unlimited numbers without necessary recourse to an artist\'s prototype. Pop art\'s interest in consumerism made the idea of repetition a key concept in the work of Andy Warhol, who often did little other than oversee the production of his silk-screen prints. Thus a multiple is not synonymous with the limited-edition, fine-art print, where the idea of a limited number of examples helps to boost the value. The true multiple is a consumer article, an industrially-produced fashion accessory, freely available, disposable, and wholly antagonistic to the notion of ‘fine art’. PD MG |
