Masochism and Sadism |
Masochism and sadism were first described by the founder of modern sexual pathology, Richard Krafft-Ebing (1840 - 1902). Ebing, a forensic scientist, first published his Psychopathia Sexualis in 1886; it was an immediate success and was constantly revised and updated. He coined the term sadism in memory of the Marquis de Sade: it describes the act of sexual pleasure in association with afflicting physical pain upon the partner. The word masochism was used in memory of Sacher-Masoch: it described the association of sexual pleasure with humiliation or mistreatment by a woman. (He also pointed out that masochists hated the idea of actual physical pain or flagellation.) MJ |
