Mammalogy is the scientific study of mammals. It grew from humankind\'s historic knowledge of animal husbandry. In the 4th century  BCE, Aristotle recognized mammals as a group which included whales and dolphins, but the position of humans among the mammals was not accepted until much later. Modern mammalogy is stimulated by this link; the behaviour of mammals is studied in the hope of learning something of human behaviour and a number of mammals are exploited for medical research. Some mammals are thus among the best understood of living organisms yet others have barely been studied. RB
