Histology (Greek histos, ‘web’ + ology), in the life sciences, is the microscopic study of tissues, which are collections of cells with the same function (for example, muscle or nervous tissue). The science was originally concerned with the structure and its relationship to function, but the advent of tissue- and enzyme-specific stains, by-products of the dye and pharmaceutical industry, have enabled histologists to identify tissues by biochemical means.
