An ecological guild describes a group of species, plants or animals, which have a similar habitat or lifestyle. The members of such a group live in overlapping niches; an example can be seen in a group of fish which have a highly specialized mode of nutrition. Called cleaner fish, all members of the guild feed by removing parasites and other unwanted organic material from other fish. The various species of cleaner fish have avoided coming into direct competition with one another by adopting species-specific behavioural patterns. Examples of guilds are common in most ecosystems and illustrate how the process of evolution permits the survival of species which differ only in very subtle ways. RB
