When geneticists talk of the ‘gene pool’ of a population, they mean the genetic resources available. The greater the gene pool, the larger the number of combinations which can arise through sexual reproduction. If a gene pool is very small, then the rate of genetic drift is enhanced and the likelihood of inbreeding is increased. Evolution acts upon the gene pool through the mechanism of natural selection, and produces changes in the frequency of occurrence of specific genes. RB
