Documentary drama refers to plays and theatrical events based directly on, and often incorporating quotations from, factual material. As with history plays questions of authorial point-of-view often determine critical response, since the purpose of documentaries is to raise public awareness of the issues presented theatrically. Documentary drama, as practised by Piscator in the Living Newspapers and in the work of Joan Littlewood, has been a significant sub-genre in 20th-century US and European drama. TRG SS
