Contemporary history is the name given to history of the very recent past normally the history of the last half century or less. Some historians argue that there can be no such history, because the lack of free access to governmental official documents prevents informed historical judgements, and because events are too recent to be seen in proper perspective. These arguments are rejected by contemporary historians, who maintain that the idea that historical truth is necessarily to be found in official documents or state archives is risible, and who believe that through interviews (oral history) and the techniques of the social sciences (for example, social surveys and content analysis of the media) contemporary analysts can generate valid sources to sustain their arguments.
