Computer Simulation

One of the major problems in 20th-century science and engineering is the expense of experiment. It costs money to build a model of a bridge to test a new design, for example, and such a model may not be very accurate as a mimic of the behaviour of the actual bridge. In another example, some investigations of the very early universe cannot be performed using telescopes. The answer to both of these problems is the computer simulation. The programmer inputs the relevant parameters (for the bridge it could be the average wind speed or the strength of the steel used for example) into the computer, which contains a program to mimic the behaviour of the real bridge or the real universe. In the second example, the results would be compared with the appearance of the universe today; for the engineer designing the bridge, unworkable designs will be eliminated without the need to build costly and time-consuming models.
