The term church (from Greek kuriakon [doma], ‘lord\'s house’) refers to an assembly of people, social institutions and their associated beliefs and practices which comprise a distinct religious grouping. Churches, in contrast to sects (see sect/sectarianism), claim a universal social membership based on birth and accept the importance of the state and other secular institutions in maintaining social order.
