Cell biology is the study of the physiology of the cell and of its interactions with its environment. The interaction of a cell type with its neighbours and with the whole body of an organism is an important aspect. Some of the most extensively studied cell types are the lymphocytes, which are responsible for the cell-mediated immune response. Other cell types have been the focus of attention in cell biology because of peculiar characteristics or specializations: thus much work on nerve-cell biology has been performed on giant squid axons and work on cell behaviour has often concentrated on motile cells such as amoeba.
