Beholder, The |

Until recently the demands or expectations held by the spectator or viewer of a work of art were considered incidental to consideration of that work. In the search for the key to meaning, preference was given to the artist\'s intention. This attitude has recently been challenged by those who argue that the construction of meaning is a two-way process, and that the role of the beholder in the process is pivotal. The approach has been adopted by several factions in recent art history, from reception theorists to feminists, both of whom regard the social status, intellectual make-up, or gender of the beholder as central to the construction of meaning.
