Aesthetic Judgements

Aesthetic judgements (from Greek aisthanein, ‘to perceive’ or ‘sense’) are judgements about the aesthetic status of objects, judgements about their beauty or ugliness. ‘Michelangelo\'s David is beautiful’ is an aesthetic judgement about a work of art. ‘The Rockies are ugly’ is an aesthetic judgement about a part of nature which is not a work of art.

Aesthetic questions of particular interest to philosophers include: are aesthetic qualities objective or subjective? Are objects beautiful or ugly independently of minds and the judgements they make? Or are objects beautiful or ugly only because minds judge them to be so? AJ
